Just before 9 a.m. on October 28, two high-speed trains collided near Urda in Toledo province, about 130 km south of Madrid, on the Madrid–Andalusia line. AFP counted at least 31 dead and about 80 injured. Regional emergency services put the toll at 39. Rescuers still could not reach the bottom of some carriages, so the number may rise.

State-run Renfe hits private Iryo
Renfe confirmed one of its trains was in an accident with a train run by private operator Iryo. Spanish media reported the Renfe train rammed the Iryo service. One account says a stationary train was hit at over 100 km/h. Track manager Adif is investigating the sequence of events.

Two disasters on one corridor in a year
In January, a high-speed collision near Adamuz in Córdoba province killed 46, per AFP. The same Andalusia corridor has now seen two mass-casualty crashes in ten months. Spain runs Europe's longest high-speed network, about 4,000 km, and its signaling and dispatch systems now face full review.

Competition isn't the issue; dispatch is
Since Spain opened high-speed rail to competition in 2021, Iryo and Ouigo cut Madrid–Barcelona fares by roughly 40% and ridership surged. Both crashes happened on track run by state-owned Adif. The probe belongs on state dispatch and signaling, not on rolling back competition.
The toll is still moving. Watch Adif's signal logs: the answer is likely there.
