Iran announced June 6 it is pausing all negotiations with Washington and, with its Axis of Resistance, will "completely block" the Strait of Hormuz while moving to close the Bab el-Mandeb. The declaration followed IRGC ballistic missile and drone launches at US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait — all intercepted by US, Bahraini and Kuwaiti forces — after a US self-defense strike on Qeshm Island. Hormuz traffic has run near 5% of pre-war levels since March 2. Brent has traded around $97. Tehran says talks stay frozen until Israel ends operations in Lebanon and Gaza.

Missile Exchange, Zero Hits
The IRGC volley targeted US facilities in Bahrain — home of the Fifth Fleet — and Kuwait. US, Bahraini and Kuwaiti air defenses intercepted every projectile, with no major damage reported. The trigger was a US strike on Qeshm Island that Washington called self-defense. It marks the first simultaneous Iranian attack on US installations in two Gulf states since the war began in late February.

Two Straits, One Energy Chokehold
Pre-war, Hormuz carried about 25% of seaborne crude and 20% of global LNG. Just 191 vessels crossed in all of April — roughly 5% of the pre-war norm. The Bab el-Mandeb adds nearly 15% of global maritime trade as the Suez gateway. Saudi Arabia is already rerouting crude through Yanbu on the Red Sea, and Pakistan has formally requested rerouted supply.

The Price of Resuming Talks
Tehran's stated condition: an end to Israeli operations in Lebanon and Gaza. Trump insisted June 1 that negotiations continue. JPMorgan assesses oil-inventory depletion could force a Hormuz reopening as soon as June. This week's House war powers vote shows the war's economic cost has entered Washington's political math.
Oil markets are pricing a long blockade. June is now the swing month for both inventories and diplomacy.
