Binance's $6.3 billion hack, Intel and Amazon sink, Iran options, Dnipro strike

Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, lost about $6.3 billion to hackers on October 29. It is the largest crypto theft on record, roughly four times the $1.5 billion Bybit hack of February 2025. Most funds moved in about 20 minutes starting at 20:05 UTC. Binance halted all deposits and withdrawals and pledged to cover every loss. Bitcoin fell about 4.3% and Ether 4.6% on the day.
1

One laptop opened the door

Binance said the breach began with a compromised laptop. The attacker reached a service container and submitted unauthorized withdrawals. TRM Labs puts the haul at about $6.36 billion across ten blockchains. Chainalysis estimates roughly $6.4 billion.
2

North Korea is the prime suspect

TRM Labs and Chainalysis both point to North Korea. Chainalysis CEO Jonathan Levin said the attack was likely the work of the TraderTraitor group. Attribution is not yet official. Pyongyang has long used stolen crypto to fund its weapons programs, so the money trail is a national security issue.
3

The market freezes $3 billion

Binance said about $3 billion has been frozen. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle also froze linked funds. One analyst said the breach does not appear to create meaningful solvency risk. Private firms locked up nearly half the loot within hours, faster than any regulator could act.
$6.3 billion is a warning. Private on-chain tracking freezing nearly half the loot is the market's answer.
